Breast reconstruction is surgery to make a new breast shape after an operation to remove the breast (mastectomy). Breast reconstruction may be performed at the same time as a mastectomy—or months or even years later.
There are three types of breast reconstruction:

• reconstruction using a breast implant
• reconstruction using your own tissue
• reconstruction using both an implant and your own tissue

Your surgeon will advise you on the type of surgery that is most appropriate for you. This will depend on a number of things, such as your breast size, how much breast tissue has been removed, and your preferences.

You are likely to have more than one operation before your final breast shape has been achieved. In the first operation, the surgeon creates a breast shape. You may be offered further procedures to improve the appearance of your breasts.

If your nipple is removed, you may choose to have a new nipple made. This is often done once the new breast has had time to settle into its new shape, and frequently happens about six months later.
