What happens before surgery?
Before the surgery you will have an appointment in the clinic to determine your general state of health and to ensure that you are fit for the operation. You will have a blood test and possibly a chest x-ray or a test to check the state of your heart.
You may also see the surgeon and anesthesiologist. Be sure to ask questions about the operation. It is important that you understand and that you are involved before agreeing to surgery. Authorization is required to have the operation.
Do not drink any liquids for a number of hours before your operation. On the day of your surgery, nurses will help prepare you. You may have to shave your body hair in the area that is being operated on. The nurse may give you a pair of special stockings to wear during and after the surgery. This is to help prevent the formation of blood clots in the legs.
