Types of breast cancer
There are different types of breast cancer, and the way they are treated depends on cancer type.
Most types of breast cancer are invasive, meaning that the cancer cells invade the surrounding areas and ducts and lobes of the breast.
With this in mind, we can classify breast cancer types as:
- Invasive ductal carcinoma: is responsible for 70-80% of all cases
- Invasive lobular carcinoma: represents 10% of cases and if very difficult to diagnose with just one mammogram
- Ductal carcinoma in situ: is the earliest form of breast cancer and usually develops as a palpable node or a non-palpable lesion detected during a mammogram
- Lobular carcinoma in situ: from a practical point of view, this is considered a risk factor for developing breast cancer
